The Benefits of Employee Wellness Programs | AIHR Learning Bite

What do you think of when you imagine an employee wellness program? Do you picture a smoking cessation program? A weight-loss challenge? Nap rooms on-site? Discounts to the local gym? There are many different types of wellness programs, but not all are created equal.

Here are four common types of wellness programs and why they might not be equipped to meet the needs of todayâs workforce:

Benefit #: Employee Wellness Programs Could Decrease Depression

The evidence:One study from Nutrition found that a specific health and wellness program, the Coronary Health Improvement Project , actually led to decreased depression as an added benefit to improved nutrition.

The researchers used the Beck Depression Inventory as a measure, and they suggest that in addition to the nutrition factors contributing to decreased depression, the social interaction and positive reinforcement involved in the program may have helped.

Make your case: Wouldnt it be great if we could make our employees happier? By offering an employee wellness program, we could help employees fight their depression as they improve their health.

What Are The Benefits Of Employee Wellness Programs

A well-run wellness program is a powerful way to support your employees and provide them with the resources they need to practice healthier lifestyles. Healthy employees are more likely to feel satisfied and motivated in their roles. Workplace wellness programs can improve productivity, company culture, employee morale, recruitment, retention, and absenteeism. They can also help lower health insurance or workersâ compensation costs.

These programs have a growing impact on a companyâs ability to attract top talent. Gen Zers and Millennials in particular seek companies that have wellness programs in place:

  • 87% of employees consider health and wellness packages when choosing where to work.
  • 67% of employees who work for companies with wellness programs enjoy their jobs more and are extremely or very likely to recommend their employer to others.
  • Nearly 54% of Gen Zers and 58% of Millennials believe wellness programs are important or extremely important when making a job decision.
  • 45% of employees working at small to medium-size organizations would stay in a role longer because of their employerâs wellness program.

Benefits of offering Employee Wellness Programs

Recruiting and retaining great people is a challenge that companies across the globe and in all industries are grappling with. In the US, skills shortages have more than tripled in the last ten years, with 69% of employers currently struggling to fill positions, up from just 14% in 2010. By 2030, its estimated that the global talent shortage could reach 85.2 million people.

A recent report indicates that frontline workers saw the sharpest fall in engagement during the pandemic. Retail, hospitality, travel, and healthcare employers must work hard to attract and retain people.

All this means that the relationship between employers and employees has fundamentally shifted. In particular, hospitality and retail workers have more choices than ever about where they work, and companies need to understand peoples priorities and reexamine their employee value propositions to compete.

In this article, well share some thoughts on how you can enhance your organizations employee benefits package to ensure you stand out.

What Is A Benefits Package

Most organizations offer some form of benefits package, but the perks and extras that make up these packages will vary depending on the employers industry, budget, and values.

Benefits programs vary greatly, but they typically include medical, life, and disability insurance, retirement income plan contributions, paid leave, an employee stock ownership plan, and educational assistance programs.

Benefit #: Higher Employee Satisfaction

Employees in companies that have employee wellness programs report higher satisfaction with their job.

According to the AFLAC Workforce Report, employees who took part in a workplace wellness program are more satisfied with their jobs than those who dont partake.

The International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans Workplace Wellness 2017 Survey Report reports that employees in companies who offer employee wellness programs and initiatives are 67% more satisfied than employees in companies who dont have an employee wellness program.

Provide Time Management Solutions

One of the most significant stress factors for employees is a lack of time management. Employees have to manage their workloads while maintaining a high quality of work.

Thats why even the best wellness program wont help if employees dont have the time to participate.

Fortunately, you can help alleviate some of this stress by introducing a time management solution like Time Doctor.

Time Doctor provides employees with the right tools and data they need to become more self-reliant, accountable, and productive.

For instance, employees can track how long they spend on tasks and use real-time reports to gain detailed insights into their productivity. Managers can also use these features to analyze employee performance with ease.

Additionally, employers and managers can use Time Doctors Work-Life Balance Widget to determine potential work-life balance issues in advance and step in to prevent employee burnout.

  • Which employees are working outside of their scheduled shifts.
  • Which employees are working too many hours daily.

Benefit #: Reduced Health Costs

Research reveals hidden benefits of employee wellness programs

The implementation of employee wellness programs results in lower health care costs.

A comprehensive review of the literature has concluded that employee wellness programs have the ability to reduce employee-related health care expenditures.

Among the 22 different studies that looked at employee wellness programs and healthcare costs, the average return on investment was 3.27. This means that for every dollar that was spent on the program the company saved $3.27 because of reduced healthcare costs.

Probably the most famous example is that of Johnson & Johnsons employee wellness program, which saved a total of over $38 million in its first four years, averaging $224 per patient per year.

Reduces Health Care Costs

This is one of the most prevalent benefits of employee wellness programs. Working for a firm that encourages people to exercise and eat healthy benefits their health. It is better for your health to stay safe. This means not getting sick or hurt. It also saves on medical costs.

A study shows that workplace wellness programs can reduce health care costs. When employees are in good condition, they donât have to visit the doctor and pay their expenses while also purchasing medicines. This way, they may save a lot of money over time.

So, start including your employees in your companyâs health program to keep illnesses at bay.

Helps Retain Current Talent

While rate of pay, adequate time off and insurance-based benefits can help you keep your top employees, offering an employee wellness program can also make them want to stay. This is partly because offering this type of program tells your staff that you care enough about them to help them increase their health and overcome their biggest obstacles related to living a healthy lifestyle. It also enables them to invest in their own quality of life without having to find and secure these programs on their own.

Wellness Or Fitness Challenges

Workplace wellness or fitness challenges are designed to promote healthy lifestyles and often center around movement goals, improved nutrition, or weight loss. Many employers offer prizes such as monetary rewards, Peloton machines, or a Fitbit.

While they may sound great in theory, wellness challenges may be ineffective at best and actively harmful at worst. They often fail to create significant change in an employee base because they are short-term and promote a narrow view of health. They may also harm the mental health of employees who have struggled with body image issues or eating disorders.

Set Goals That Benefit Employees And The Organization

Five Key Benefits of Employee Wellness Program in 2021

Wellness programs should be tailored to the needs and goals of your employees. For example, if your job requires employees to sit at a desk for most of the day, creating an on-site fitness center or offering yoga classes is one way to increase movement and encourage exercise. If a goal of your organization is to improve their eating habits, offering fresh fruits and vegetables or other healthy alternatives can promote healthier nutritional habits.

Incorporate Feedback For Future Improvements

A good employee wellness program continuously grows to improve and fit the needs of an organization. A great way to improve a wellness program is by creating opportunities for employees to provide constructive feedback about specific initiatives or the overall structure of the program. You can create a survey or allow employees to provide open-ended feedback. Regularly checking in on your organization’s feelings toward the program can help guide decisions and apply effective changes.

The Attraction Of Top Talent

In todays job market, candidates have their pick of employers. To attract top talent, companies need to offer comprehensive benefits packages that include a robust workplace wellness program. Creating a wellness program that offers options that appeal to all of your employees is one way to maximize engagement and participation in the program. Incorporating various aspects of wellness can help you create a well-rounded program. Some examples include:

Physical health

Employees often express the challenges of creating a sustainable workout or fitness plan that aligns with their work schedule. Creating initiatives that promote and encourage exercise can help employees achieve both personal and collective organizational goals in a practical way. Companies can create various initiatives that target physical health, including offering seasonal or annual gym memberships, creating an on-site fitness room or center or organizing physical activities outside of the work.

Nutrition

Many employees are interested in improving their eating habits. Providing healthy lunch, snack and beverage options, offering workshops or courses on improving eating habits, hiring a nutrition counselor or establishing a partnership with a local food company who can cater weekly lunches are some examples of initiatives related to nutrition.

Financial wellness

Mental and emotional wellness

A comprehensive wellness program includes initiatives focused on improving the mental and emotional well-being of employees. Examples of mental and emotional wellness include:

  • Regularly conducting check-ins

  • Allowing for flexibility in work schedules, such as work-from-home days

  • Creating peaceful break rooms

Wellness programs involve shared goals and struggles and maybe even group meetings, support groups. and fitness activities. As employees work on improving their health together, bonding and camaraderie will follow.

And as we mentioned in benefit #9, the social interaction and positive reinforcement associated with group participation in wellness programs can offer valuable, if unintended, benefits.

Make your case: Employees cite lack of communication in the workplace as a company problem in our surveys year after year. Implementing an employee wellness program will get people working together toward the same goaloutside of their usual work responsibilities. This would definitely improve company communication, and it would support good health at the same time.

How To Evaluate Your Benefits Package

Setting Up a Wellness Program at Your Workplace

If you want to augment or extend your employee benefits package, you must ensure that your investment delivers results. Here are some tips for assessing and selecting your benefits package:

  • Focus on programs that save you money upfront and are easy, quick, and inexpensive to implement. How many of your HR team members will need to be involved? How many steps are involved in the launch? What services does the benefits vendor include or charge extra for?
  • Where possible, look for benefits vendors that offer performance guarantees or performance-based pricing.
  • Ask for employee referrals and testimonials from potential vendors.
  • Invest in benefits that complement other programs and fill gaps rather than duplicate existing initiatives so you create the most comprehensive benefits package possible.

Benefits Of Employee Wellness Programs For Employers

How to Improve Your Employee Wellness Program for 2023

There are many reasons why you should want to add new wellness programs for your employees or begin if you arenât already. Here are some of them:

  • Reduce healthcare costs
  • Help with recruiting new employees
  • Help employees eat, drink, and smoke less
  • Build and sustain high employee morale

While this list alone gives you enough reasons to roll up your sleeves or get HR to strengthen your employee wellness programs, consider that itâs also the right thing as an employer to do for your people.

Your employees spend about 1/3rd of their life helping build a company for you, shareholders, or both, and many put their heart and soul into it.

Adding some of these wellness programs is a fitting way to express your appreciation by not just throwing money at them but by trying to improve their happiness and personal satisfaction as people.

If your interest is piqued at all, send out a survey and ask your employees what type of wellness programs theyâd like to have. Theyâll appreciate that you asked, and theyâll appreciate it even more if you move forward and put a new program or two in place.
