Is The $300 Deduction For Nonitemizers Available For 2021
Yes. For the 2021 tax year, single nonitemizers can again deduct up to $300 in cash donations to qualifying charities. The 2021 deduction for married couples who take the standard deduction has increased they can deduct up to $600 of cash contributions. Qualifying charities include public charities and operating foundations but not private foundations, supporting organizations, or donor-advised funds. This special deduction will not be available in 2022 unless the present law is extended. And as of Jan. 13, 2022, it has not been extended by Congress.
Claim Your Tax Credit
To claim a charitable donation tax credit, save your official donation receipts from any registered charities and other qualified donees. After you have your receipts from all your donations, follow these steps:
Step 1: Decide how much you want to claim. You can also claim donations made by your spouse or common-law partner. In one tax year, you can claim:
- donations you made between January 1 and December 31 of that year
- any unclaimed donations you made in the last five years
- any unclaimed donations you made after February 10, 2014, which were gifts of ecologically sensitive land, the conservation and protection of which is important to the preservation of Canadas environmental heritage.
Step 2: Once youve determined how much you want to claim, calculate your tax credit by calculating the eligible amount of your donations. Usually, this is the amount shown on your charitable donation receipt. Complete Schedule 9 to calculate your tax credit.
Step 3: Enter the amount you calculated on Schedule 9 on line 34900 of your return.
Keep your official donation receipts along with your proof of payment. This includes cancelled cheques and credit card or bank statements. You should keep your receipts for six years in case the CRA asks to see them.

Quid Pro Quo Contributions
For certain donations, some calculation is required to determine the amount that can be deducted. These include quid pro quo donations for which the donor receives an economic benefite.g., goods or servicesin return for the gift.
For example, if a donor receives a T-shirt in return for making a donation, the deduction is limited to the amount of the contribution that exceeds the fair market value of the shirt. So, if the contribution is $40, and the fair market value of the T-shirt is $20, the deductible amount is $20 .
The same rule applies for contributions for events like charity dinners, for which the fair market value of the meal must be subtracted from the cost of the event to determine the amount of the deduction.

Temporary Increase In Limits On Contributions Of Food Inventory
There is a special rule allowing enhanced deductions by businesses for contributions of food inventory for the care of the ill, needy or infants. Investments: If you donate stocks, mutual funds, exchange traded funds or other eligible capital assets that have appreciated in value, you can get a donation receipt for the fair market value of the donation. For Most Americans The Standard Deduction Is A Better Option
So, what’s the catch? Why don’t people take advantage of this? The big reason is the standard deduction.
To make tax filing more efficient, the IRS offers all citizens a deal: you can just take a standard deduction rather than making a big list of all of your deductions. You simply choose the highest option for you — either the standard deduction or the total of all the things you can actually deduct, like charity and mortgage interest. The real challenge in figuring out whether to itemize is simply finding evidence for all of your deductible expenses.
For a single person, that standard deduction is currently $12,550. That means that if you don’t have any mortgage interest and haven’t made a single charitable donation this year, you still get $12,550 chopped off your gross income before taxes are calculated. For married couples, that means $25,100 in deductions, and that’s more than most people can find in their expenses.
In order for charitable giving to reduce your tax bill, you need to have deductions that add up to more than the standard deduction. As a result, only around 15% of Americans actually itemize their deductions the rest just take the standard deduction.
Donating To Charity Through Land Property Shares
You dont have to pay tax on land, property or shares that you donate to charity. It is possible to get relief on both income tax and capital gains tax.

Generally, you only can claim a charitable donation on your taxes if you itemize your deductions.
This changed with the passage of the CARES Act, which allows you to deduct $300 for a monetary charitable contribution, even if you dont itemize your deductions. However, only cash donations qualifyif you donate goods to a local nonprofit, such as clothing or household goods, the donation wont qualify.

Suppose your itemized deductions do not exceed the standard deduction amount for your tax bracket. In that case, you could combine, or bunch, and itemized amounts gifted in January and December of the same year. This way, the total of both gifts exceeds the standard deduction, allowing you to deduct the full amount.
