Eliminating Manual Processes To Improve The Client Experience
As a third-party administrator of health plans, Employee Benefit Management Services is on a mission to improve the care experience, reduce health costs, and simplify the benefit journey for everyone.
The company administers health insurance for 300 employers, and serving its clients means EBMS needs to share important insurance data with different organizations from healthcare providers and pharmacies to employers and insurance members.
Prior to MuleSoft, EBMS had to manually create all up to 80,000 files per day to send to clients. Each client they served used 10-20 different partners to support their health plan and employee benefits. Manually creating each of these was a cumbersome, time-consuming, and error-prone process that led to a disconnected client experience and a frustrating healthcare experience for the patients.
Roose V Lincoln County Employee Group Health Plan
When Kent Roose was injured in an automobile crash his wife was an employee of Lincoln County, which provided health benefits via a group health plan that was part of Joint Powers Trust . Employee Benefit Management Services, Inc. . Appellants subsequently reimbursed Roose the requested amount. In 2014, Roose filed a motion for partial summary judgment and class certification, arguing that Appellants violated section 2-18-902 through systematic practices that amounted to seeking subrogation against the tortfeasors liability carrier before Roose was made whole. Roose also sought class certification on behalf of every member of Appellants plans subject to Montana law that contained the coverage exclusion. The district court granted Rooses motion. The Supreme Court affirmed, holding that the district court did not abuse its discretion in certifying the class or in defining the class.

Delivering A Single Patient View To Ebms And Its Clients Using Api Integrations
To improve the client experience and increase operational efficiency, EBMS needed to adopt a new strategy and unified platform that enables them to quickly and efficiently share insurance data with multiple organizations in real-time.
With MuleSofts Anypoint Platform, EBMS took an API-led integration approach using APIs and web services to build an electronic data interchange solution that connects to different organizations systems and creates a single view of all data. With MuleSoft, EBMS can now securely send data to health providers, pharmacies, employers, and insurers in real-time via a web portal and mobile app.
EBMS then reused the same API integrations to build a push notification feature that sends stakeholders critical updates and information via text or email. This saves employers and insurance members critical time because they only need to log in to the portal or mobile app only when they receive an important push notification.
With MuleSoft, we didnt need to completely overhaul the systems and data we have instead, we built APIs that helped us better leverage existing data fast. Thanks to this API-led approach, we now deliver the great experience that our clients deserve.

Employee Benefit Management Services Company History Timeline
In 1875, the American Express railroad company established the first private pension plan in the United States Banks, utilities, and large manufacturing companies soon followed suit.
In 1884, for example, the B& O Railroad pension plan provided a benefit of up to 35% of pay but only to those workers retiring at age 65 with at least 10 years of service.
In 1920, the federal government finally established a pension plan for its employees.
In 1929, Baylor hospital officials offered a non-profit medical plan to 1,300 area public school teachers that cost 50 cents/mo. in exchange for 21 annual days of free hospital visits.
After his election to the presidency in 1932, Franklin D. Roosevelt chose not to pursue universal healthcare coverage.
In 1935, Congress passed the Social Security Act for the same reason many employers had adopted private pension plans to encourage and allow older workers to retire so younger ones could take their place.
The Labor-Management Relations Act of 1947 provided guidelines for the establishment and operation of pension plans administered jointly by an employer and a union.
In 1948, the NLRB ruled pensions to be considered wages that they fell under conditions of employment and, hence, subject to collective bargaining.
In 1954, Congress codified this exclusion in what is now Code section 106 and also expanded Code section 105 to exclude benefit payments made to employees under self-insured, as well as insured, health plans.
