The best Medicare dental plans will depend on your needs. Original Medicare doesnt cover routine dental services, such as cleanings, fillings and extractions. For dental coverage, seniors on Medicare can buy a separate policy or turn to Medicare Advantage plans, most of which offer some form of cost help for dental care.
Medicare Advantage plans are a bundled alternative to Original Medicare, sold by private insurers. They include Medicare Part A and Part B and usually Part D . These plans charge a monthly premium or no premium, and they often include extra benefits such as some coverage for hearing and vision care.
Each plan also gets a star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, or CMS, on a scale of 1 star to 5 stars based on the quality of care and customer satisfaction.
The vast majority of people enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans have access to dental care, although the type of coverage and limits on cost sharing vary.

What Dental Care Does Medicare Advantage Cover
Medicare Advantage dental coverage may be as basic as annual cleanings and X-rays, or a plan may cover more comprehensive services like extractions and dentures. Many plans have an annual dollar limit on coverage, so although a plan may cover comprehensive services, if you need significant work done in one year, you may still spend a good amount out of pocket.
A plan may also require prior authorization for more expensive services.

How Does Humana Medicare Advantage Work
According to a Humana customer service representative, its networks are regionally based. Each plan has its own set of providers, specialists and pharmacists.
Plan options vary based on location, but can include health maintenance organization plans, preferred provider organization plans, special needs plans and private fee-for-service plans.
Private fee-for-service plans essentially allow you to work with any provider who is Medicare-approved and agrees to the conditions of your plan.
Humana HMO plans allow you to choose a doctor from the Humana provider network. With Humana, youre also not locked into a provider and can switch as you see fit. Most Humana HMO plans include prescription coverage. They also offer hearing benefits, as well as vision and dental benefits, none of which are covered by traditional Medicare.
PPO plans are more flexible in terms of picking providers, so if you have several specialists or a preferred physician, a Humana PPO plan may be best for you.
Humana SNPs are designed for people who are:
- Living with a chronic health condition
- Dually eligible for Medicare and Medicaid
- Residents of a long-term care facility
There are two specific types of SNP plans with Humana: Chronic Condition Special Needs Plans and Dual-Eligible Special Needs Plans. Currently, these plans are available in just under 30 U.S. states.
Each Humana Medicare Advantage plan includes dental, vision and hearing benefits. Other benefits often offered by these plans include:

What Is A Humana Medicare Advantage Plan With Dental Coverage

Medicare Advantage plans must cover, at a minimum, everything that Original Medicare covers with the exception of hospice care, which is still covered by Medicare Part A.
Many Medicare Advantage plans, including the ones offered by Humana, provide additional benefits, such as routine dental coverage and prescription drug coverage. Not all of Medicare Advantage plans from Humana have the same additional benefits, so check that the plan youre interested in provides routine dental coverage.

Don’t Miss: How To Check Medicare Benefits
Is Dental Covered By Medicare
A Medicare Advantage plan that includes dental benefits is the most common way of getting dental coverage while on Medicare. Original Medicare plans don’t cover dental care, but you can sign up for standalone dental insurance plan or get dental coverage through Medicaid if you qualify for dual enrollment.
Option : Standalone Dental Plan For Seniors
Some health insurers offer dental coverage for seniors as standalone dental plans. These add-on plans are a great choice for dental coverage if you only have Original Medicare or if you have a Medicare Supplement plan.
When selecting a plan, compare coverage details and plan specifics because there is a broad range of policies on access and restrictions. Each plan will specify how much it covers for preventative dental care, basic services or major services. Most plans have a network of providers, and checking this list can make sure you have access to your preferred dentist.
The best dental insurance plans for seniors are from DentaQuest, Aetna and Humana.
DentaQuest: best customer satisfaction
Remember to compare plans based on the waiting period, and some policies may not cover major services until you’ve had the policy for several months. Humana is a great option if you need dental care immediately because most plans have no waiting period for major services like root canals, crowns and dentures.
Many providers may also offer an alternative to dental insurance called a dental discount program. These dental network programs aren’t the best fit for everyone, but we recommend them as one of the five ways to get a cheap dental cleaning without insurance.

Humanas Optional Supplemental Benefits
While many Humana Medicare Advantage plans include dental benefits, you can also get additional dental coverage with a Humana optional supplemental benefits plan.
You can enroll in an OSB plan at any time of the year to add supplemental coverage to your Humana Medicare Advantage plan.
Find out what dental plans are available in your area by visiting the Humana dental page and entering your state.
Costs for Medicare Advantage plans are based on your ZIP code and the plan you choose. Here is a sample of the costs for Humana Medicare Advantage plans that include dental coverage.
When Should You Get A Standalone Dental Plan
If you’re not signing up for a Medicare Advantage plan that gives you unified coverage across medical and dental, a standalone dental plan is the next best way to get coverage.
You can purchase a plan directly from a private insurance company, and most let you sign up for dental insurance even if you don’t have medical insurance through the company. This plan won’t be connected to your other coverage through the Medicare program, but it can help you get cost-savings benefits so you get the dental services you need.
Benefits of standalone dental plans:
- Choose the level of coverage you want, with plans ranging from basic or preventative coverage to plans that cover more extensive dental treatments.
- Select the insurance company that has your preferred dentists in its network of providers without this choice influencing your medical plan.
Dental plans for seniors include Dental HMOs, which generally have lower monthly costs but only cover care from an in-network dentist. If you’d rather have the flexibility to see any dentist, choose a Dental PPO plan that provides broader coverage but generally costs more each month.

Option : Medicare Advantage Plans With Dental Coverage
Dental coverage varies widely by Medicare Advantage plan. In some cases, you have to pay extra to have dental care included in your plan. There could also be options for basic or premium coverage, letting you choose the dental plan that works for you.
Look for plans that offer low-cost or free preventative services. If you need more expensive treatments, pay attention to the plan’s cost-sharing percentage and the cap on how much the plan will cover each year.
The best Medicare Advantage plans for dental coverage are from AARP/UnitedHealthcare, Aetna and Highmark.
AARP: largest network of dentists
Among our picks for the best Medicare Advantage plans, Aetna has the cheapest monthly costs. The company reimburses policyholders for in-network dental coverage, and it provides the option for expanded dental benefits at an additional monthly cost. This can be a great way to manage your expenses if you need significant dental services in the upcoming policy year.
If you’re signing up for a new Medicare Advantage plan, you can choose your dental coverage options during the plan selection process. If you’re already enrolled in Medicare Advantage, talk to your provider about what dental coverage options are available to you, and if there is no add-on coverage available, you may be able to enroll in a standalone dental policy.
