What Do Scammers Call Medicare
Scam operators call beneficiaries claiming to represent Medicare. They may say that new Medicare benefits cards are being issued and threaten to cancel Medicare coverage unless the beneficiarys information is updated claim they can improve benefits verify your new Medicare card number to make sure you received your card tell you to send in your old one, or claim they are selling Medicare policies. The caller might even ask for your information to send you a gift card. Sometimes, theyre selling phony products such as supplemental or prescription drug Medicare plans.
Guard Your Personal Information
Solicitations from Medicare scammers can seem very realistic and tend to pick up during open enrollment, which runs from October 15 through December 7. Scams can happen at any time of year though, so seniors need to be vigilant.
Scammers may try to make contact in a variety of ways including telephone, email, postal mail, text messages, leaflets and fliers. Generally, they’re looking to steal personal information such as your Medicare number, which can be used to file bogus Medicare claims. Often the senior has no idea these claims are happening, said Richard Scheff, a partner in the litigation practice group at global law firm Armstrong Teasdale.
Don’t respond to solicitations from companies you don’t recognize or click on links or respond to emails from people you don’t know. And if you get a phone call from someone claiming to be from Medicare, hang up immediately, even if the phone number on the CallerID screen seems like it could be credible. Scammers can use a fake CallerID name to impersonate Medicare or another known organization, according to a consumer warning from the Federal Trade Commission. Seniors should know that no one from Medicare will call or text them unsolicited to ask for money or to help with enrollment or some other service.
The Medicare Advantage Scam And Beyond
Kay Tillow writes for Daily Kos about the Medicare Advantage scam and beyond. She explains that these for-profit health plans that deliver Medicare benefits are using stars like Joe Namath to mislead people into signing up for coverage that very well might not meet their needs if they get sick or need a lot of costly care. Medicare Advantage plans, in fact, could keep them from accessing critical care.
What Namath does not tell you is that if you choose the wrong Medicare Advantage plan, you might face inappropriate denials of care, along with other administrative and financial barriers to care. Indeed, new research finds that the wrong choice of Medicare Advantage plan might literally kill you. Thats what Yale economics professor Jason Abaluck found when analyzing data about these corporate health plans. But, the plans wont let you have access to their mortality data, and Congress is not requiring them to give you access.
Instead, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services is allowing Medicare Advantage plans to send you to the Medicare Coverage Helpline. And, while you might think that it is a government, independent agency, it is in fact a corporate marketing agency, designed to seduce you into giving up your public health insurance under traditional Medicare and to sign up for a private insurance Medicare Advantage plan.

Medicare Scams To Watch Out For
Next Avenue Contributor

Hello, this is Medicare calling. Your coverage is about to be cancelled.
This type of fraudulent call and others like it happen every day. According to AARP, Medicare fraud losses hit $60 billion in 2017 and continue to rise. And Medicare scammers seem to come out of the woodwork around the annual Open Enrollment period, which ends December 7.
The crooks are after your money or Medicares. They can use your information to file false claims, file upcharge claims for more expensive medical tests or equipment than the ones received, obtain pharmaceuticals to sell on the black market, sell your data to others on the dark web and even obtain treatment for themselves under your name.

Threatening A Loss Of Coverage
This scam usually begins with a senior receiving a call that says they must have a prescription drug coverage plan or they will lose their other Medicare benefits. If the senior doesnt purchase a plan during enrollment time, then their Medicare benefits will be terminated. Of course, this caller claims to offer just the right Rx plan for the senior to increase their coverage and safeguard their benefits.
Sound a little too good to be true? Thats because it is. If someone says you must join a plan or buy some sort of coverage to avoid losing your other Medicare benefits, its a scam. The Medicare prescription drug benefit is an entirely optional addition to your coverage under Original Medicare . The same goes for Medigap policies.

Is Your Medicare Plan Legitimate Or A Scam How You Can Tell
More Videos
If you are on Medicare, you only have three weeks left to pick out a plan for coverage in 2019.
But how do you know which plan is best, and how do you avoid the Medicare scams that are targeting seniors right now.
Commercials are in full swing selling Medicare Advantage coverage plans, but how do you know whats legitimate or a scam? We turned to Raymond Hurd, a Regional Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. He warned about any phone calls or personal visits.
Were never going to call you, so if somebody calls and says they represent Medicare, its probably a fraud. If theyre trying to tell you that you can get something for free, that Medicares going to pay for, its probably a fraud, said Hurd.
About two-thirds of Medicare recipients get benefits through government-run original Medicare. The other third enrolls in Medicare Advantage plans. But with Advantage plans you must make sure your doctors are in-network for maximum reimbursement. And just like private health insurance companies, there are different Medicare Advantage plans.
Some Medicare Advantage plans may cover hearing or vision and others may not. Their monthly premiums may vary too, so you need to sort of shop around and see what best fits your needs, he said.
Hurd says its best to go to medicare.gov online to compare plans that are best for your needs or call 1-800-medicare, where a rep will explain each plan or refer you to a local counselor.

Medicare Coverage Helpline Scam: How It Works
Watch out for the Medicare Coverage Helpline Scam happening this month. Many people are getting Medicare scam calls claiming to be from local medical centers. The topic of the discussion is anything related to the pandemic. How does it work? Crooks call using automated services and ask the recipient to confirm the continuation of the annual coverage.
Then they ask them to make a payment that didnt go through the previous time. Alternatively, the callers let the victims know about a new mandatory prescription that they need to get. Lets take an in-depth look.
In all cases, criminals exploit the health concerns of the victims and ask for confirmation of their Medicare number and their credit card details. As expected, most of the people who fall for the Medicare scams are the elderly. They are scared about their well-being, especially since the COVID-19 is deadly amongst people over 70 if not treated immediately.
The World Health Organization recently released a video explaining what people need to do to protect themselves from getting the Coronavirus. Watch it below:

Protect Yourself Against Medicare Scams
Still getting calls from people claiming to be from Medicare, asking for money or personal information? Watch this video about how you can protect yourself from Medicare scams:
The FTC worked with AARP to create a series of videos about imposter scams including Medicare scams, IRS imposters and robocalls. While the videos are aimed at older Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, the tips apply to everyone. For the next three Fridays, well highlight these videos.
This week, youll learn about these calls that pretend to be from Medicare. The video will help you recognize the scammers who ask for your Medicare number so you can get a back or neck brace. Or who say they need your information or money so you can get a new Medicare card. And youll hear from an FTC expert about how to avoid these scams:
- Hang up. If someone calls claiming to be from Medicare, asking for your Social Security number or bank information to get your new card or new benefits, thats a scam.
- Dont give personal information to a caller claiming to be from Medicare. You cant trust caller id. These calls can be spoofed so they look like theyre coming from Medicare even when theyre not. Before you give any personal information, initiate your own call to Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE.
- Report the call. Report Medicare imposters at 1-800-MEDICARE and ftc.gov/complaint. The more we hear from you, the more we can help fight scams.
Switching Back To Original Medicare

While you can save money with a Medicare Advantage Plan when you are healthy, if you get sick in the middle of the year, you are stuck with whatever costs you incur. If you decide that the Medicare Advantage Plan isnt for you, you have the right under federal law to purchase any Medigap plan if you switch to Original Medicare within 12 months of the date that you joined a Medicare Advantage Plan for the first time.
You may also switch from your Medicare Advantage Plan to Original Medicare during the annual Open Enrollment Period or if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. However, you may not be able to purchase a Medigap policy . If you are able to do so, it may cost more than it would have when you first enrolled in Medicare.
Keep in mind that an employer only needs to provide Medigap insurance if you meet specific requirements regarding underwriting . The wait time for Medigap coverage can be avoided if you have what is called a guaranteed issue right.
A thorough breakdown of what is considered a guaranteed issue right, where an insurance company cant refuse to sell you a Medigap policy, can be found on the Medicare website.
Most Medigap policies are issue-age rated policies or attained-age rated policies. This means that when you sign up later in life, you will pay more per month than if you had started with the Medigap policy at age 65. You may be able to find a policy that has no age rating, but those are rare.
