Do Humana Medicare Advantage Plans Offer Prescription Drug Coverage

Medicare Basics: Parts A, B, C & D

Many Humana Medicare Advantage plans may offer prescription drug coverage that is equal to or better than that of a standalone Medicare Part D plan.

Members can choose from a wide range of in-network pharmacies and may even be able to have their prescriptions mailed right to their home.

Not all Humana Medicare Advantage plans offer prescription drug coverage, and benefits may vary from plan to plan. Your insurance provider will detail what medications are covered, the plans drug list and how much it will cost to fill your prescriptions.

Prior Authorization Of Prescription Drugs

There may be times when an approval from Humana must be obtained before having a specific prescription filled. This is called prior authorization and is one way to help make sure you are getting the right treatment for your condition.

There are several reasons why a prior authorization may be required for a prescription:

  • State or federal guidelines may require a review of certain prescriptions.
  • There may be a more affordable medication available that can be used to treat the same condition.
  • The medication prescribed might contain side effects or require special monitoring.
  • The medication prescribed might be dangerous when mixed with another drug.
  • The medication prescribed carries an increased risk of abuse or misuse.

The drugs that require prior authorization will be noted on the Prescription Drug Guide. Your doctor will be able to file a request for prior authorization, but you may also request a prior authorization online.

What Are The Best Zip Codes For Medicare In 2022

Dont go moving just yet, Medicare Advantage plan options change every year. Moving for a policy isnt a sensible decision since these plans wont be the same next year.

In the Top 10 Zip Codes in America for Seniors, Arizona, and Kansas both have two zip codes with a high score of survey satisfaction.

But, if the lowest costing Medicare Advantage plans are the point of interest for you, San Diego or Los Angeles have seemed to offer quite a few $0 plans with extremely low out-of-pocket costs. The only downside, coverage is only available within the plans service area.

Medigap plans cover you anywhere Medicare covers you, and some plans even provide foreign travel emergency coverage. But Medicare Supplement plans vary in price depending on where you live.

Of course, even the cost of Medigap changes too much, the difference between the most expensive state for Medigap and the cheapest could still be less than $80 a month.

In most cases, the cost of Medicare insurance is aligned with the cost of living in that area. So, as we stated above, dont rush to move just for a Medicare plan.

Give Back Benefit Medicare Program Eligibility

To get a give back benefit, Medicare doesnt require you to meet any additional eligibility standards. The biggest qualifications are being eligible for Medicare Advantage, and finding a plan in your area that offers a give back benefit.

Why does location matter? Unlike Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage plans use provider networks. These are groups of doctors, hospitals and other providers that have agreed to treat an insurance companys clients. While you can sometimes see doctors outside of your provider network , you must sign up for a plan in your area. If there are no plans offering Medicare give back benefits in your area, youll need to enroll in another plan.

Are you eligible for cost-saving Medicare subsidies?

Why Do People Choose Medicare Advantage Or Medicare Part C

Many seniors prefer Medicare Advantage because of the additional Cover it provides. But, you must know that extra Coverage has its price tag. You cannot withdraw from the Original Medicare.

And, it simply means youll have to pay a premium for both the Original Medicare plan and for Medicare Part C as well.

Some Complexities

Although private companies run the Medicare Advantage, the prices can still be lower than the traditional health care plan. Numerous ambiguities in the Medicare Part C come from private plans.

Its mandatory that the Medicare Advantage Plans you use come from providers present in your locality. If you live outside the network the plan offers, you wont be able to sign up.

And with Original Medicare, you can visit any healthcare facility that accepts Medicare across the Country.

Does My Zip Code Impact My Medicare Options

Zip code does affect which plan options are available to you. For example, Medigap and Medicare Advantage plans will vary in pricing as well as features depending on your location. Additionally, you must live in the plans service area to be eligible for enrollment.

Medicare Advantage plans are impacted most by zip code changes. Did you know Medicare Advantage plans dont cover you outside the service area? So, in many cases, when you leave the service area you no longer have coverage.

Also, Medicare Advantage plan premium costs are cheaper in metropolitan areas, and more expensive in rural areas. Some areas may offer policies with a larger network of doctors or more ancillary benefits.

Since Medicare Supplement plans are standardized, they have the same coverage in all states, except for Wisconsin, Massachusetts, and Minnesota. Pricing will vary greatly depending on your zip code.

If you want a policy that allows you to have coverage in another state, Medigap would be a good option for you.

Medicare can be broken down into two different plans: Medigap and Medicare Advantage.

Medigap, often known as Medicare Supplement, is available to Original Medicare beneficiaries, and it covers the ‘gap’ between what the original service pays and what you owe in extra expenses.

Medigap plans are run by private insurance companies and therefore their availability and pricing will vary depending on location. You can compare the different plans available in your region using the official U.S. government website.

Medicare Advantage, on the other hand, takes the place of Original Medicare and is a more reinforced package, offering several different plans.

What Is Medicare Part A

Medicare Part A is basic inpatient coverage that Medicare beneficiaries can use during hospital stays. To enroll in Medicare Part A, you must be 65 years old, receive Social Security Disability Income for at least 24 months, or have a diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or end-stage renal disease .

Thus, the qualification requirements for Medicare Part A are the same as those for Medicare Part B.

Most people will have premium-free Medicare Part A. However, not everyone qualifies for this perk. To be eligible for premium-free Medicare Part A, you or your spouse must work at least ten years paying Medicare tax.

If you do not meet this requirement, Medicare Part A could cost up to $506 a month in 2023. Additionally, the premium is subject to increase each year.

Evaluating Medicare Plan Options In Each State

10,000 American seniors turn 65 every day, and all living Baby Boomers will be at least 65 by the year 2030.

Today, 63.5 million Americans mostly age 65 and older are enrolled in Medicare. These tens of millions of people, however, dont have access to the same Medicare insurance options.

Over 26 million Medicare beneficiaries are enrolled in a type of private Medicare plan called a Medicare Advantage plan. Another 24 million are enrolled in a stand-alone Medicare prescription drug plan .

  • Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Plans Also known as Medicare Part C, Medicare Advantage plans are sold by private insurance companies and replace a beneficiarys government-provided Original Medicare coverage. Medicare Advantage plans offer all the same benefits of Original Medicare, and many plans may offer additional benefits that Original Medicare doesnt cover, such as prescription drugs. In 2022, 89% of all Medicare Advantage plans include prescription drug coverage.
  • Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans Also known as Medicare Part D, these plans provide coverage exclusively for retail prescription drugs, which arent typically covered by federally-provided Original Medicare .
  • Beneficiaries can have either a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug plan, a standalone Part D plan or neither, but they cannot have both.

Over 64 million Americans are enrolled in Medicare, and this number will only continue to rise as members of the baby boomer generation continue to join the 65-and-over demographic.1

Medicare Advantage enrollment is also on the rise. In fact, more than 26 million Americans or more than one out of every three people with Medicare are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan.2

A Medicare Advantage plan offers the same coverage as Medicare Part A and Part B, and some Medicare Advantage plans may also offer benefits such as vision, hearing and dental coverage. Some plans may also cover prescription drugs.

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies. Plan availability varies from state to state.

Can You Have Medicare In Two States

No, you cant have Medicare in two states. Youll need to choose a primary state for your residence, usually, the state you file your taxes in is the state where your Medicare is active.

If youre someone that travels between two or more states frequently, a Medigap plan could make sense for you. Medigap plans dont force you into a plan service area unless you have a MedigapSelect policy.

Since Medicare is a federal program, you dont need to worry about which state you reside in, coverage will be available. With Medigap, they cover their portion when Medicare approves the claim.

How Do Medicare Part B Give Back Plans Work

Give Back Benefit – What Is It and How Does It Work?

Medicare Part B Give Back plans are health plans offered by private insurance companies rather than Medicare.

Like other Medicare Advantage plans, beneficiaries enjoy Original Medicare Part A and Part B coverage benefits and usually some extra perks.

These bundled plans provide comprehensive coverage that reduces out-of-pocket costs for hospital treatments, doctors visits and other outpatient healthcare services. Additional benefits such as prescription drug coverage are also typical features.

The Give Back initiative is another one of the supplemental benefits that set these plans apart. The insurance company pays for all or part of the Part B premiums on their members behalf, representing a considerable saving each month.

What Medicare Part C Plans Are Available

Medicare Part C plans are available through major health insurance companies as well as regional carriers depending on your location. Some of the most popular Medicare Part C carriers include:

    • UnitedHealthcare

Each of these carriers offers different plans with varying benefits. However, the most popular Medicare Part C plan types are HMO and PPO plans.

Thus, if you are looking for a plan with a wider availability of doctors and hospitals, you might need to look at PPO plans. If you are looking for a smaller network of providers, an HMO plan might be right for you. Often, PPO plans come at a higher cost because they allow more benefits than an HMO plan.

To know which plan types is right for you, it is important to research the available plans in your area to know what benefits will best fit your needs.

Who Can Join A Medicare Advantage Plan

Beneficiaries who have Medicare Part A and Part B can join a Medicare Advantage plan if they also:

    • Live in the service area of the plan they want to join
    • Are a U.S. citizen or legal resident who has lived here for at least 5 years

Not all Medicare Advantage plans are available in all areas. Most plans have a designated service area, or specific cities or zip codes, where they offer coverage. You must live within that service area in order to enroll in that plan.

If you live in another state for part of the year, or are curious about a plan’s service area, contact the plan directly.
