With so many Medicare plan options available, its hard to know which plan will meet your medical needsespecially when it comes to coverage. Plans F and G are known as Medicare Supplement plans. They cover the excess charges that Original Medicare does not, such as out-of-pocket costs for hospital and doctor’s office care.

Its important to note that as of December 31, 2019, Plan F is no longer available for new Medicare enrollees. However, if you enrolled in Medicare before 2019 or already have Plan F, the decision between Medicare Plan F vs. Plan G is still an important one.

Medicare Supplement Plan F Costs

Because Medicare Supplement Plan F offers the most comprehensive coverage of the standardized lettered plans offered in most states, premium costs tend to be higher than other plans. Costs may vary by plan, company, and location, so check with the specific insurance company if youre interested in this plan.

Medicare Supplement Plan F also has a high-deductible version. This option generally covers the same benefits as the standard Medigap Plan F, but it means youll pay for all Medicare-covered costs out of pocket until you reach Plan Fs deductible amount. In 2017, the deductible is $2,200 . After youve reached the deductible, your Medigap Plan F will start to pay for the covered benefits listed above.

A Medicare Supplement high-deductible Plan G might become available in 2020.

Keep in mind that Medicare Supplement plans are offered by private insurance companies, and these companies arent required to sell every plan. Always make sure to research plan options in your specific zip code.

How Much Does Medigap Plan F Cost

Private companies offer Medicare supplement plans. As such, the cost of a plan can vary greatly by company, even for the same benefits.

Youll have to pay a monthly premium with a Medicare supplement plan. This is in addition to premiums you pay for other parts of Medicare, such as Medicare Part B or Part D.

An insurance provider can set their Medicare supplement plan premiums in three different ways:

  • Community rated. Everyone who has the policy is charged the same amount regardless of how old they are.
  • Issue-age rated. The premium is determined by how old you are at the time you buy the policy. Premiums are lower for younger buyers and higher for older buyers but dont increase as you age.
  • Attained-age rated. The premium increases as you get older. Your policy will become more expensive as you age.

How Much Does Medicare Plan F Cost

This figure depends on a multitude of factors. Plan F premiums hinge heavily on where you reside, but gender, age and tobacco use all come into play as well as insurance providers determine their rates. Sometimes discounts are available for non-smokers, women or married people who have multiple policies. Meanwhile, companies that use medical underwriting might set higher premium rates depending on your health status.

People who are eligible for Plan F enrollment can expect to pay a monthly premium between $150 and $400 , with the average hovering around $230. Again, that number could vary significantly depending on the provider you pick and the personal factors mentioned above.

How To Choose A Medicare Supplement Plan

Now that Medicare Plan F is only available to a certain subset of the population, those who are just signing up may struggle with their coverage decisions. Is a Medigap Supplement plan necessary? And is Plan G the best option?

Price recommends doing online research and speaking with an insurance agent who can guide you through the process. Medicare.gov also has a tool that helps people find and compare supplement plans.

Really focus on the things that matter to you mostwhether that be getting the maximum amount of coverage or saving some money, says Price, regarding the research process.

And dont stress too much about the phaseout of Plan F. We havent seen this be a big problem, says Schwarz. Its just not that significant because these other plans are available.

A Skilled Nursing Care Coinsurance

Medicare Part A covers some skilled nursing facility services. But after 20 days of inpatient skilled nursing facility care, you need to start paying daily coinsurance to keep your coverage going.

For days 21 through 100 in a skilled nursing facility, the daily c-insurance is $194.50 per day in 2022.

Medicare Supplement plans will cover this cost unless you have Plan A or Plan B. If you have any other plan, it will be covered at least partially.

Note: Plan K covers only 50% of the coinsurance and Plan L only covers 75% of it.

Unfortunately, not every Medicare beneficiary can enroll in Medicare Supplement Plan F, as the plan was discontinued for many Medicare beneficiaries.
