Information About You

Your date and place of birth and Social Security number.
The name, Social Security number, and date of birth or age of your current spouse and any former spouse. You should also know the dates and places of marriage and dates of divorce or death .
Names and dates of birth of children not yet 18 years of age.
Your bank or other and the account number.

Information About Your Medical Condition

Name, address, and phone number of someone we can contact who knows about your medical conditions and can help with your application.
Detailed information about your medical illnesses, injuries, or conditions:

Names of medicines, the amount you are taking, and who prescribed them.
Names and dates of medical tests you have had and who ordered them.

Information About Your Work:

The Social Security Administration is the largest provider of benefits to children. Benefits For The Spouses Of Retirees

The spouse of a retiree who is already drawing Social Security is eligible to receive a spousal benefit. The payment equals up to one-half of the retired spouse’s monthly payment, also known as their primary insurance amount . In order to receive this benefit, the spouse receiving the spousal benefit must be at least 62 years old or be caring for a child who is younger than 16 or who receives Social Security disability benefits.

You must have reached what Social Security calls your normal or “full” retirement age in order to receive the entire one-half of your retired spouse’s PIA. That age is 66 years and two months for people born in 1955 and rises by two months per year of birth until it reaches 67 for those born in 1960 or later. If you opt to receive benefits before that time, you will be penalized according to a formula similar to that used to compute the reduced benefits of workers who retire early.

At the time you are eligible for the spousal benefit, you may be eligible to receive more from Social Security based on your own earnings record than you would receive through that of your spouse. If this is the case, the Social Security Administration automatically provides you with the greater benefit.

So, for example, in 2021, if you’re 64 and made $25,000 in other income, your Social Security benefits for the year would be reduced by $3,020.

Benefits For Children With Disabilities

Dependent and Spouse Benefits Under Social Security Disability

A child under age 18 may have a disability, but we don’t need to consider the child’s disability when deciding if he or she qualifies for benefits as a dependent. The child’s benefits normally stop at age 18 unless they are a full-time student in an elementary or high school or have a qualifying disability.

Children who were receiving benefits as a minor child on a parents Social Security record may be eligible to continue receiving benefits on that parents record upon reaching age 18 if they have a qualifying disability.

Types Of Social Security Benefits

First, there are two types of Social Security disability benefits that an individual can receive: Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Insurance Income . Only individuals who have worked enough years to qualify can receive SSDI. An SSDI recipient’s children, spouse, and sometimes even parents can collect dependents benefits as well as survivors benefits after the individual’s death.

Those who have limited assets and income may be eligible for SSI. Individuals do not need to have worked a certain amount of time prior to becoming disabled in order to qualify for this benefit. An SSI recipient’s dependents or survivors are not entitled to dependents benefits.

How Much Can Dependents Receive

The Social Security Administration limits the total amount each family can receive through Social Security Disability benefits.

Each dependent can receive up to 50 percent of the claimants total amount, and the limit per family is between 150 and 180 percent of the claimants monthly benefits allowance.

This means that if there are multiple dependents, the SSA will reduce the monthly amount of each dependent so that it does not exceed the total limit.

Ssi: A Lifeline For Children With Disabilities

Supplemental Security Income is the only source of federal income support targeted to families caring for children with disabilities, and it reaches only the lowest-income and most severely impaired children. These children live with conditions such as Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, intellectual disability, and blindness. Their vulnerable families face higher costs, more demands on their time, and more insecurity than families not caring for a child with a disability. The modest income that SSI provides doesnt solve every problem these families face, but it reduces their struggles and helps provide the highly individualized supports their children may need.

Get medical coverage for them

How Do I Calculate My Childs Monthly Social Security Disability Benefits

In theory, Social Security Disability is a straightforward program. SSD simply provides financial aid to those who cannot fully support themselves and their families due to an illness or debilitating ailment. In practice, however, applying for disability is rarely simple, especiallywhen youre applying on behalf of your child.

Benefits For Divorced Spouses

If you are divorced from a retired worker, you’re eligible to receive an amount equal to one-half of your former spouse’s PIA, provided you were married for at least 10 years.

The rules are similar to those for spousal benefits described above, with a notable exception: You can begin receiving benefits even before your former spouse has begun to do so. However, you have to be at least 62 years old, and the divorce must have been finalized for at least two years if you have not yet reached your normal retirement age.

Divorced spouses who had more than one marriage that lasted at least 10 years do not receive multiple benefit checks or one for each marriage. But the Social Security Administration does automatically choose the former marriage that will yield the largest benefit to the ex-spouse.

Applying For Disability Benefits Through Ssi

To start the process of filing for SSI, you can let Social Security know that you want to complete an application for SSI at www.ssa.gov/benefits/ssi/start.html. This site asks for some basic information to get started, such as:

name, date of birth, and Social Security number of the child who is applying
child’s contact information, including mailing address, phone number, and email address , and
if you’re starting the process for a child, your contact information.

After you submit some basic information online, Social Security will contact you to set up an appointment to finish the process. If you start the process online, please be aware that this basic information is not the complete application! But, completing the basic information online can be useful, because Social Security will use the date you submitted this information as the date of your application, which could help you get more back pay.

You can also fill out the Child Disability Report online. The report asks for information about the child’s disabling condition and how it affects their ability to function. It usually takes about an hour to complete.

Apply For Benefits Online

You should apply for disability benefits as soon as you develop a disability. Follow these easy steps to apply online for disability:

To start your application, go to our Apply for Benefits page, and read and agree to the Terms of Service. Click Next.
On that page, review the Getting Ready section to make sure you have the information you need to apply.
Select Start A New Application.
We will ask a few questions about who is filling out the application.
You will then sign in to your personal mySocial Security account, or you will be prompted to create one.
Complete the application.

You can use the online application to apply for disability benefits if you:

Are age 18 or older.
Are not currently receiving benefits on your own Social Security record.
Are unable to work because of a medical condition that is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death.
Have not been denied for disability in the last 60 days.

You may be able to file online for SSI at the same time that you file for SSDI benefits. Once you complete the online process described above, a Social Security representative will contact you if we need additional information.

Apply For Survivors Benefits

Social Security Disability: Qualifying for benefits

You should notify us immediately when a person dies. However, you cannot report a death or apply for survivors benefits online.

In most cases, the funeral home will report the persons death to us. You should give the funeral home the deceased persons Social Security number if you want them to make the report.

If you need to report a death or apply for benefits, call 1-800-772-1213 . You can speak to a Social Security representative between 8:00 a.m. 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. You can find the phone number for your local office by using our Social Security Office Locator and looking under Social Security Office Information. The toll-free Office number is your local office.

If you are not getting benefits

If you are not getting benefits, you should apply for survivors benefits promptly because, in some cases, benefits may not be retroactive.

If you are getting benefits

If you are getting benefits on your spouse’s or parent’s record:

You generally will not need to file an application for survivors benefits.
We’ll automatically change any monthly benefits you receive to survivors benefits after we receive the report of death.
We may be able to pay the automatically.

If you are getting retirement or disability benefits on your own record:

You will need to apply for the survivors benefits.
We will check to see whether you can get a higher benefit as a widow or widower.

Can Children Collect Disability Benefits

There are three different ways children can collect Social Security or SSI disability benefits. All of the benefits discussed here are cash benefits paid to disabled children or to the children of disabled or retired workers.

Low-income children with disabilities. Disabled children whose families have low income can collect Supplemental Security Income until they’re 18, at which point they might be eligible to start collecting adult SSI benefits. Children who are approved for SSI disability can also receive health coverage through the Medicaid program.

Children who don’t qualify for SSI. Children who are younger than 18 and have a parent who is currently receiving Social Security disability or Social Security retirement benefits may be able to collect dependents benefits based on their parents’ records, whether they’re disabled or not.
