Registered nurses provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients and the public about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their families. RNs work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, physicians offices, and home health care services.
To become an RN, you must complete an accredited nursing program and pass the National Council Licensure Examination . You will also need a valid RN license in the state in which you plan to practice.
Medical assistants are responsible for a variety of tasks in a healthcare setting, from administrative duties like scheduling appointments and handling insurance paperwork to clinical tasks like taking patient medical histories and vital signs. Some medical assistants may also have additional training or certification in areas like phlebotomy or medical coding.
While there is no formal education requirement to become a medical assistant, most have at least a high school diploma or equivalent. Many medical assistants also complete a postsecondary education program, which can last anywhere from a few months to a year.

We are pleased to offer services to individuals with Stanford Health Care Alliance insurance, an insurance option for Stanford University and Hospital employees. Individuals with SHCA insurance may receive psychotherapy from Pacific Anxiety Group psychologists at the “in-network” rate. Please note that only employees of Stanford University, Stanford Hospital and Clinics, and Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital with SHCA are eligible for in-network treatment.

These out-of-network psychotherapy benefits are not currently available for SHC or LPCH employees, but you can reach out to your benefits manager to inquire about their coverage.

A personal doctor as your advocate for the best care
Youll have a primary care physician to act as your dedicated personal doctor. Your PCP will get to know you, your health goals and medical history, and will make sure your care is well coordinated.
- Each family member may select a different PCP and you can change PCPs at any time.
- Your Stanford Health Care Alliance ID card will list the PCP for each family member enrolled.
Navigation for specialty services
Your PCP will serve as your personal navigator and refer you to specialty network providers when you need additional care or medical services. This ensures that you get precisely the right care, from precisely the right doctor.
- Visits to a specialist will need to be directed by a primary care referral, with a few exceptions such as behavioral health, well-woman, acupuncture and chiropractic care.
- Many PCPs and specialists offer virtual visits.

Stanford Health Withholds Health Benefits For Striking Nurses
Five thousand nurses at Stanford Health Care and Stanford Children’s Health in California face losing their health benefits for going on strike Monday.
Stanford responded to the labor action by informing employees that it will not pay premiums for their employer-sponsored health plans during the strike. Workers who wish to maintain their coverage must pay the full premiums via the federal COBRA law, according to Stanford.
Negotiations between the employer and the Committee for Recognition of Nursing Achievement, the union representing the workers, began in January and the previous contracts expired March 31. The parties have brought in a federal mediator and the next bargaining session is scheduled for Tuesday.
“We respect our nurses’ legal right to take part in a work stoppage but are deeply disappointed that the union chose this path. A union work stoppage is a serious event that is disruptive to our patients, families and colleagues. The impact can be deep, long-lasting and costly,” Dale Beatty, chief nurse executive and vice president of patient care services for Stanford Health Care, and Jesus Cepero, senior vice president of patient care and chief nursing officer for Stanford Children’s Health, said in a statement.
The Committee for Recognition of Nursing Achievement, or CRONA, has not set an end date for the strike.
The Stanford strike is among of a handful of recent labor disputes at California hospitals.

Stanford Health Care and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital administrators have announced they will cut off health insurance benefits to striking nurses and their families as well as pay.
The hospitals announced the cuts on Friday to the Committee for Recognition of Nursing Achievement , a union of more than 5,000 nurses representing the two hospitals, which plans to begin striking on April 25 after both sides failed to reach contract agreements.
The union has posted a petition on its website that has thus far garnered nearly 23,000 signatures. The petition will be presented to hospital officials prior to the strike, CRONA said in a statement.
“It is beyond cruel and insulting for the hospitals to cut off health care for the nurses who have given everything to the hospitals in these last two years and are simply asking to negotiate common-sense solutions for their patients and their profession especially when the hospitals reported that their joint operating surplus increased by $676 million in 2021, in addition to a combined revenue of approximately $8.3 billion,” the union said.
“Instead of trying to address why 93% of eligible nurses voted to go on strike, the hospitals responded with this cruel move that’s clearly designed to punish nurses and break their resolve.”
