Employee Benefits Informational Meeting

When used in this chapter, the following terms shall have the following meanings, respectively, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise:

Board. The State Employees’ Insurance Board.

Class. An employee or retiree shall be included in one of the following classes: active employee single, active employee family, non-Medicare retiree single, non-Medicare retiree family, Medicare retiree single, Medicare retiree family, non-Medicare retiree with Medicare eligible dependent, or Medicare retiree with non-Medicare dependent.

Employee contribution. The amount of the total health insurance premium to be paid by the employee or retiree as determined by the board.

Employer contribution. The amount of the total health insurance premium to be paid by the employer as determined by the board.

Federal poverty level. Income level determined in Section 673 of the Community Services Block Grant Act 2 ). Should the federal government no longer derive or substantially change its derivation of the federal poverty level, the State Employees’ Insurance Board has the authority to derive and apply an alternate poverty level to carry out its obligations under this chapter.

Medicare retiree. A retiree entitled to benefits under the federal Medicare program .

Non-Medicare retiree. A retiree not entitled to benefits under the federal Medicare program .

  • Proper notice of the accident and injury must be given to the employer.
  • WAITING PERIOD – In cases of temporary total or temporary partial disability, no compensation shall be allowed for the first three days after disability, nor in any case, unless the employer has actual knowledge of the injury or is notified thereof within the period specified. Compensation shall begin with the fourth day after disability, and in the event the disability from the injury exists for a period as much as 21 days, compensation for the first three days after the injury shall be added to and payable with the first installment due the employee after the expiration of the 21 days.

    All eligible employees are required by state law to contribute 6.2% of their gross annual salary to TRS . This defined benefit program provides retired employees with a specific benefit payable monthly for the lifetime of the member. In addition to the employee contribution, the University contributes a percentage which is determined by the Alabama Legislature.

    TRS members are eligible for retirement benefits at age 62 with 10 years of participating service. Upon service retirement, employees are also eligible to join the states Public Education Employee Health Insurance Plan . Rates for this plan vary based on age at retirement and years of TRS service.

    Individuals resigning from employment before vesting in the program, or before qualifying to receive benefits, may request a refund of their contributions and applicable interest.
