Eye tests and corrective glasses are not taxable where an employee uses a visual display unit , and the provision of a test and glasses is required by Health and Safety regulations.
The cost of coronavirus antigen tests paid for by your employer is not taxable where the test took place in either of the tax years 2020/21 or 2021/22. A similar exemption applies where the cost is reimbursed to you before or after you take the test.

How Are Working From Home Tax Deductions Calculated
There are various methods for calculating remote work tax allowance, and again it depends on the tax authority in question.
In the UK, for example, remote employees can claim tax relief on £6 a week, with no evidence needed. Alternatively, they could claim tax relief on the exact amount of expenses incurred instead. In this case, evidence, including bills and receipts, is required.
In Australia, multiple calculation methods are also available:
- Shortcut method: A temporary method to calculate tax allowance for home expenses during the pandemic . This may be extended depending on when work patterns return to normal.
- Fixed-rate method: A long-term solution through which employees receive AUD 0.52 in tax deductions per hour of home office work. Unlike the UKs £6-a-week allowance, the Australian tax authority requires evidence of the additional expenses incurred.
- Actual cost method: Another long-term solution that is used to calculate tax allowance calculation based on actual costs.
While these methods may seem cumbersome, for many, theyre well worth the trouble to alleviate the costs incurred by remote working, which may lead to increased engagement and productivity.
Benefits Of Being A First
First-time homebuyers can take advantage of multiple programs and benefits catered to their needs. For instance, you might be concerned about your down payment, which is generally 6% to 7% of the homes sale price for first-time buyers. However, there are programs to help cover your down payment as well as the closing costs .

How the credit would work: If your tax bill for the year were $5,000 and you received a refundable tax credit of $15,000, you would get a $10,000 check from the federal government for that year. Just be aware that if the bill passes in its current form, this tax credit is capped at a maximum of $15,000.

How Does Working From Home Change Tax Deductions In 2020

The Residential Energy Efficient Property Credit was a tax incentive for installing alternative energy upgrades in a home. Most of these tax credits expired after December 2016 however, two credits are still around . While this proposed bill is the most exciting potential credit for first-time homebuyers, it doesnât exist as of this writing. So, if youâre looking to buy your first home in the near future, there are other ways you can find tax credits.
Most states offer first-time home buyer programs that include tax credits, and may even provide zero-interest loans and grant money to put toward a down payment.
In Texas, for example, the Texas State Affordable Housing Corporation offers mortgage tax certificates that let you deduct a large portion of your mortgage interest on your annual federal tax return.
Most state programs have a maximum limit on income and property value since they cater to lower-income buyers, but theyâre worth checking out to see if you qualify.
If you have a Roth IRA or traditional IRA, first-time homebuyers are also allowed to take up to $10,000 out of their accounts to buy a home. Each account has different rules and tax consequences, so if you need a little extra help with your down payment, discuss this tool with your real estate agent before pursuing it.
How The Tax Break Works
There are two ways eligible taxpayers can calculate the home-office deduction.
In the simplified version, you can take $5 per square foot of your home office up to 300 square feet, giving the method a $1,500 cap.
This home office needs to be used only for your business as in, it can’t be a guest room with a desk in it and you must be able to prove that you need an office for your work. The burden of proof for taking this deduction is on the taxpayer, so if you’re audited, you will have to back up your claim to the IRS.

The regular version of the deduction is a bit more complicated, as you must keep track of all your actual expenses. You can write off up to 100% of some expenses for your home office, such as the cost of repairs to the space.
You can also deduct a portion of other expenses, including utilities, based on the size of your office versus your home. For example, if your home office is 10% of your entire living space, you can deduct that much from the costs of mortgage, rent, utilities and some kinds of insurance.
IRS Form 8829 will help you figure out the eligible expenses for business use of your home.

Home Accessibility Tax Credit
If you meet one of the following three criteria, the Home Accessibility Tax Credit could help you save taxes on an eligible renovation costing up to $10,000:
- Youre homeowner and you qualify for the disability tax credit
- Youre eligible to make a claim for a qualifying individual
- Youre over 65 years old

Who Can Claim 2021 Tax Deductions When Working From Home
Since the 2018 tax reform became law, generally only self-employed people can claim tax deductions when working from home. Working as an employee and for yourself doesnt necessarily disqualify you from taking these tax deductions. The deductions have to be related to your self-employed income rather than your employee work.
Even in this situation, youll generally need to make sure your home office is only in support of your self-employment and not your job as an employee. For other expenses such as phone and Internet, you can split these between working for yourself, as an employee or as a personal expense. For deducting home office space on your tax return, the IRS requires these expenses to be used exclusively for your self-employed business.
To claim a home office as a business expense, you must use part of your home as your principal place of business or a place where you regularly meet greeting clients or customers or store inventory. If your home office is a separate structure then it does no have to be your principal place of business.

Working From Home Customers May Be Eligible To Claim Tax Relief In 2021 To 2022
More than half a million people have claimed the working from home tax relief this tax year and are already benefitting.

HM Revenue and Customs is accepting tax relief claims for working from home due to coronavirus during 2021 to 2022. More than 550,000 employed workers have already claimed and are benefitting from the tax relief.
If employed workers were told to work at home by their employer because of coronavirus and, as a result, their household costs have increased, they are eligible to claim the working from home tax relief. It is quick and easy to claim via HMRCs online portal.
HMRC received more than 3 million claims for the tax relief for the 2020 to 2021 tax year.
Taxpayers can check if they are eligible on GOV.UK.
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRCs Director General for Customer Services, said:

Eligible customers can claim tax relief based on the rate at which they pay tax. For example, if an employed worker pays the 20% basic rate of tax and claims tax relief on £6 a week, they would receive £1.20 a week in tax relief towards the cost of their household bills.
