Who Can Sign Up For Plan G

If you qualify for Original Medicare, you may be able to enroll in Plan G. American citizens and legal residents of at least five years can qualify for Medicare. Having worked 10 or more years is a requirement for getting Part A without a premium. If you have not worked 10 years in the US, you may still be eligible for Medicare but you have to pay the Part A premium. And in most cases, you should either be turning 65 or have a disability that qualifies for Social Security disability benefits.

The only exception to getting Medicare without the 2-year wait is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis . Cancer and other diseases e.g. some cases of breast cancer, early-onset Alzheimers disease, may be considered a disability if it meets the SSDI criteria and the 24-month waiting period applies.5

Medicare Supplement Plan F

If youre enrolled in Original Medicare and would like to have most of the federal programs out-of-pocket costs covered, Medicare Supplement Plan F may be a good option. Medicare Supplement plans may help with certain out-of-pocket health-care costs that Original Medicare doesnt pay for, such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. Of the 10 standardized plans that may be available in most states, Medicare Supplement Plan F offers the most comprehensive coverage.

Find affordable Medicare plans in your area

Please note that Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Wisconsin have their own standardized Medicare Supplement plans. Medicare Supplement Plan F isnt available in those states.

Heres an overview of what Medicare Supplement Plan F may cover and what your costs may be, as well as details on important changes related to this plan.

What Is Plan G

Medicare Plan G is the second most popular Medicare Supplement after Plan F, partly because it covers the most gaps in coverage of any Medigap plan available to new Medicare beneficiaries who first became eligible for Medicare after January 1, 2020.

All Medigap plans help pay for the costs that Parts A and B may not cover, such as deductibles, copayments and coinsurance. But each Medigap plan covers different charges at different amounts.

Medicare Supplement Plan G covers:

  • Part A coinsurance and hospital costs up to an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits run out
  • Part A deductible
  • Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment
  • Part B coinsurance or copayment
  • Part B excess charges
  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance
  • Foreign travel emergency care

The only thing that Plan G does not cover that Plan F does is the Part B deductible. However, Plan F is no longer available to those who became eligible for Medicare after Jan. 1, 2020. So for the newly eligible, Plan G may be the best option for the most extensive Medicare Supplement coverage.

Once you meet your Part B deductible, Plan G covers Part B outpatient medical services such as doctor visits, lab work, chronic disease supplies, durable medical equipment, X-rays, ambulance transportation, surgeries and a great deal more.

How Did Medigap Plans Change In 2020

The popularity of Plan G increased even faster beginning in 2020.

  • Starting in 2020, the highly-popular Plan F and Plan C are no longer available to new Medicare beneficiaries who first became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020.
  • If you were eligible for Medicare before January 1, 2020, you may be able to enroll in Medigap Plan C or Plan F if the plans are available where you live. If you currently have Plan C or Plan F, you will be allowed to stay with either plan coverage going forward.

With Plan F and Plan C no longer offered to new Medicare beneficiaries after 2020, Plan G is now the Medigap plan that offers coverage for more standardized benefits than any other Medigap plan available for sale.

What Does Plan G Cover

Plan F is considered the top-of-the-line Medigap policy. It covers 100% of the gaps in Medicare. Plan Gs coverage is nearly as good with one exception: Plan G does not cover the Part B deductible, which is $233 in 2022. Even with paying the Part B deductible, many Medicare enrollees find Plan G more cost-effective than Plan F when considering their respective premiums.

Plan G covers everything that Medicare Part A and B cover at 100% except for the Part B deductible. This means that you wont pay anything out-of-pocket for covered services and treatments after you pay the deductible.

Like Medigap Plan F, Plan G also covers excess charges. Doctors who dont accept the full Medicare-approved amount as full payment can charge you up to 15% more than the Medicare-approved amount for services or procedures. This is known as the excess charge.3 Most doctors accept the Medicare-approved payment and cannot bill you the extra amount. Since 2016, excess charges are illegal in these states: Connecticut, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

Top Coverage

Plan G offers top coverage for preventive visits, emergency care or chronic conditions.

When Best = Most Coverage

For some, the question of best means getting the most coverage. Medigap Plan F offers the most coverage possible. It covers ALL the cost gaps in Original Medicare .

Unfortunately, Plan F is no longer available for new seniors. As a result, Medigap Plan G is the next best available.

The good news is that the overall cost of a Plan G policy + the annual Part B deductible generally makes Plan G a better deal anyway. You can refer back to the chart above for a visual way to compare what each lettered plan covers.

When Best = Good Coverage With Some Out

As retired people get older, we often have a fixed budget. In addition, some patients may be super healthy and have chronic diseases easy to control with medication. If that is the case, the plan F or G could become expensive or even useless. The Medigap Plan N policy would be a very good choice. Heres the reason. Plan N is usually 20% to 30% cheaper for the same population as Plan g. Even more compared to the plan. For the elderly, premium differences are very high. It has less cost than F and G because you pay for it.

Is Medigap Plan G Right For You

Premera Medicare Supplement plan overview 2022

If youre comfortable paying a small annual deductible, Plan G offers incredible value. Plan G is an excellent alternative to Plan Fs comprehensive healthcare coverage. Its a sensible option for people with serious health issues or high medical bills.

Medigap Plan G is also beneficial for people that worry about serious health issues as they age. Just because youre in good health today doesnt mean something cant happen tomorrow.

Its better to have insurance when you need it. Of course, if a lower premium and more out-of-pocket costs are something that you would prefer, consider looking at Medigap Plan N or the High Deductible Plan G.

Overall, the best Medicare Supplement insurance plan for you is the one that provides you with the most value.
