UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plan overview 2022 (long version)

While the Give Back Benefit was first introduced in 2003, shows a significant spike in the number of searches for the Part B Give Back Benefit since 2020. Forbes also reported on increased interest in the benefit back in 2020. While there are a number of potential causes for the benefit’s rise in popularity, it’s hard to ignore the timing. The benefit reached peak popularity in 2020, the same year that marks the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic resulted in a lot of economic uncertainty, which is often paired with penny pinching.

Time will tell if this benefit will remain popular, but because of concern around inflation, there is no doubt that Americans nationwide will continue to prioritize saving.

How Much Can My Medicare Premiums Decrease

If you qualify and there are plans available in your area, you will see monthly Part B Giveback amounts range from $0.10 up to the maximum yearly standard premium.

This benefit is designed to work with Social Security. Your premium reduction is reflected in your Social Security check each month. In other words, your check will increase by the amount the giveback benefit decreases your premium.

Typically, plans do not pay you directly. If you defer Social Security, then you would see the credit amount applied to what you owe the government. Your monthly or quarterly premiums owed to government are simply reduced by the amount that applies to your chosen Advantage plan.

The give back benefit does not reduce IRMAA charges, unfortunately. Those with higher incomes can only have their premiums reduced by the same amounts listed above so $148.50 is the maximum amount available this year.

How To Choose A Medicare Plan

If you are wondering how to choose a Medicare plan and feel like tearing your hair out, you are not alone.

We frequently hear comments from Medicare beneficiaries about how they considered themselves to be reasonably intelligent people until they started trying to figure out Medicare.

Dont be discouraged! Choosing a Medicare plan can be confusing to many people. We are here to help you.

Give Back Benefit Medicare Program Eligibility

2020

To get a give back benefit, Medicare doesnt require you to meet any additional eligibility standards. The biggest qualifications are being eligible for Medicare Advantage, and finding a plan in your area that offers a give back benefit.

Why does location matter? Unlike Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage plans use provider networks. These are groups of doctors, hospitals and other providers that have agreed to treat an insurance companys clients. While you can sometimes see doctors outside of your provider network , you must sign up for a plan in your area. If there are no plans offering Medicare give back benefits in your area, youll need to enroll in another plan.

How Much Can I Get Back

The amount you get back ranges from $10 or less in some counties up to the full Part B premium amount of $148.50. In most cases, it falls somewhere between $20 and $100.

The exact amount you get back depends on plan options in your area. Dont be surprised if you find out that the same plan has different premium reduction amounts in different counties and states.

The other thing that could impact how much you get back is that Medicare Advantage plans individually set fees for premiums, deductibles, and services. Although plan providers must follow Medicares rules for coverage, they can change the fees associated with their plans once each year. These changes go into effect annually on January 1.

How Do Beneficiaries Receive The Funds

The Part B Giveback is credited monthly on the beneficiariesâ Social Security check. Judy Gee, a Broker Relationship Manager with Humana, explains that it can take a few months for the Giveback to be processed which could result in the member receiving a lump sum amount on their Social Security check to include the months prior to activation. Then, the specific dollar amount of the benefit will be credited monthly through Social Security.

For example, during Annual Enrollment Period , a beneficiary is enrolled in an MA plan featuring a $50 Part B Giveback. Their coverage goes into effect, January 1, however it will take two months for the Giveback benefit to become active. The first Social Security check upon successful enrollment and active coverage will include $100 . Moving forward, the beneficiary will see the designated $50 Giveback on their check each month.

Just the same as activation of the benefit, deactivation of the Giveback can take a few months. So, if it takes two months for the disenrollment to be acknowledged by CMS and Social Security, the member will receive a check with the overpayment for the two months subtracted.

Not all MA plans offer this benefit, so you must find a plan that does to take advantage of the savings opportunity.

To enroll in an MA plan, you must live within its service area. This means you may have a limited number of options, or the reduction program may not be offered by plans in your area.

You can use Medicare’s Plan Finder to find plans in your area that offer the giveback benefit. If you look under the “premiums” section in the Plan Details, plans with a giveback will have a “Part B premium reduction” listing and amount. This tells you the plan offers this program, as well as how much you’ll receive each month.

You can save time and get all of your Medicare questions answered by calling us toll-free and speaking to one of our knowledgeable, licensed Medicare agents. Alterations To Your Medicare Advantage Plan Can Change Your Ability To Continue Receiving A Premium Reduction

Like anything in life, this benefit isnt set in stone once you receive it. Private insurers must follow Medicares rules regarding coverage, but they all have freedom to change the fees they charge for:

  • Coverage premiums
  • Covered services

This gives them the freedom to offer the Medicare Part B Give Back reduction one year, and then change that policy the next. They can only make this change once a year, on January 1, so be sure to review your plan after January 1 for any changes. This way, if you prefer to keep a Give Back benefit, you can compare plans offering the Medicare Give Back benefit by zip code and make the switch once Open Enrollment starts on October 15.

How Do You Get Medicare Give Back

Depending on your Medicare Advantage provider, you may receive your premium reduction in one of two ways.

  • If your Medicare Part B premium is automatically withdrawn from your monthly Social Security payment, the Part B premium reduction will be credited to your Social Security check or direct deposit every month.
  • If you dont cover your Part B monthly premium with Social Security, your Medicare Part B monthly premium will be reduced directly by Medicare and youll pay that reduced amount .

TIP: To get the most out of Medicare, you need to understand your options.
