How Do I Receive The Giveback Benefit

If you enroll in a plan that offers a giveback benefit, you’ll find a section in the plan’s summary of benefits or evidence of coverage that outlines the Part B premium buy-down. Here, you’ll see how much of a reduction you’ll get. Or, you can contact the plan directly.

It’s important to know you aren’t reimbursed, you’ll just pay the reduced premium amount. The reduced amount will reflect in your Social Security payments and your SS checks will be higher than they used to be because less is being taken out for the premium. However, note that it could take Social Security up to 3 months to process your premium rebate. After that time, you’ll see an increase in your check amount.

Is Your Medicare Plan Legitimate Or A Scam How You Can Tell

More Videos

If you are on Medicare, you only have three weeks left to pick out a plan for coverage in 2019.

But how do you know which plan is best, and how do you avoid the Medicare scams that are targeting seniors right now.

Commercials are in full swing selling Medicare Advantage coverage plans, but how do you know whats legitimate or a scam? We turned to Raymond Hurd, a Regional Administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. He warned about any phone calls or personal visits.

Were never going to call you, so if somebody calls and says they represent Medicare, its probably a fraud. If theyre trying to tell you that you can get something for free, that Medicares going to pay for, its probably a fraud, said Hurd.

About two-thirds of Medicare recipients get benefits through government-run original Medicare. The other third enrolls in Medicare Advantage plans. But with Advantage plans you must make sure your doctors are in-network for maximum reimbursement. And just like private health insurance companies, there are different Medicare Advantage plans.

Some Medicare Advantage plans may cover hearing or vision and others may not. Their monthly premiums may vary too, so you need to sort of shop around and see what best fits your needs, he said.

Hurd says its best to go to medicare.gov online to compare plans that are best for your needs or call 1-800-medicare, where a rep will explain each plan or refer you to a local counselor.

How Do Beneficiaries Receive The Funds

The Part B Giveback is credited monthly on the beneficiariesâ Social Security check. Judy Gee, a Broker Relationship Manager with Humana, explains that it can take a few months for the Giveback to be processed which could result in the member receiving a lump sum amount on their Social Security check to include the months prior to activation. Then, the specific dollar amount of the benefit will be credited monthly through Social Security.

For example, during Annual Enrollment Period , a beneficiary is enrolled in an MA plan featuring a $50 Part B Giveback. Their coverage goes into effect, January 1, however it will take two months for the Giveback benefit to become active. The first Social Security check upon successful enrollment and active coverage will include $100 . Moving forward, the beneficiary will see the designated $50 Giveback on their check each month.

Just the same as activation of the benefit, deactivation of the Giveback can take a few months. So, if it takes two months for the disenrollment to be acknowledged by CMS and Social Security, the member will receive a check with the overpayment for the two months subtracted.

Finding A Plan With Medicare Part B Premium Giveback

Although Medicare Advantage plans with Part B Giveback are gaining in popularity they arent available yet in every area and are limited in the areas they are available in. If you are looking for a Part B Giveback plan near you, its best to work with a licensed independent insurance agent to discuss your options. An independent agent can help you determine which plan is right for you based on your unique health and financial needs.

Medicare Part B Premiums In 2022

In 2022, the standard Medicare Part B premium will be $148.50. Your premium may be a bit higher if you have a higher income. Below is a snap shot directly from Centers for Medicare and Medicaid about the current Part B premium scale.

The reason you have to keep paying this premium is because Medicare Part B is a paid program, unlike Medicare Part A which you earned during your working years by paying social security taxes. By default, everyone has to pay for Medicare Part B unless they get some kind of financial assistance.

While Medicare Part B is a part of original Medicare, Medicare Advantage plans are privately owned and offer additional benefits beyond original Medicare. In particular, Part B buy back is an additional benefit offered by some plans. This is sometimes confusing to many people, so bear with me.

To have Medicare Advantage, you must be enrolled in original Medicare Parts A and Parts B. In order to be enrolled in original Medicare, you must have worked 40 quarters paying into social security to earn Part A, and then pay a monthly premium for Part B. To stay enrolled, you have to continue paying your premiums!

You cant get a Medicare Advantage plan without having original Medicare.

These are just a few factors to consider when comparing plans. Take time to carefully compare plans in your zip code and all the features of the plan, not just the giveback program.
